It helps to maintain physical and mental capacities.
Ginseng is an herbaceous plant whose root is traditionally used in Chinese medicine. Its root is fleshy and resembles a human figure. The roots of Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer are rich in ginsenosides. It also contains other substances such as polysaccharides, proteins, essential oils, salicylic acid and steroids.
Traditionally, ginseng has been used as an adaptogen. It improves cognitive function (related to modulation of the cholinergic and serotonergic systems) and is an antiamnesic. Ginsenosides produce an analgesic effect, possibly mediated by opioid receptors. Ginseng also regulates blood pressure, has a lipid-lowering and hypoglycaemic action. Ginseng has a recuperative effect in cases of physical exhaustion and psychological stress. It is also an antioxidant and immunostimulant.
